Under the musical direction of Liam Condon, the choir rehearses at the Life Church in Lichfield on Wednesday evenings in school term time from 7.30pm to 9.00pm. There are no auditions to join the Palace Singers and we sing a wide range of music from folk songs, madrigals and contemporary music to large-scale choral pieces. Although we sing many fine sacred songs and rehearse and perform in churches, the choir does not specifically project itself as a religious organisation.
We typically have two main concerts a year, often held at St Chad's Church in Lichfield, as well as singing at other events, including several performances around Christmas. The venues we have performed at include the National Memorial Arboretum. Lichfield Cathedral, the Market Square, St John's Hospital and local pubs.
The Palace Singers was founded by the former Headmaster of the Cathedral School, Peter Allwood, in 2007. The choir was initially for the benefit of teachers and parents but has since widened to include anyone in the community. The choir takes its name from the beautiful 17th century Bishop’s Palace that now houses the Cathedral School. Following the Covid pandemic, we moved to St Chad's Church and, in 2025, to the larger more flexible space at the Life Church.
Perhaps the most important thing to note about the Palace SIngers is that we are a friendly bunch and have fun! Our motto is "Singing for Joy". Members often retire to socialise at a pub afterwards, and our last rehearsal each term always ends with a "bring & share" buffet, where we mingle and get to know each other better.
